From the Berlin-based Ensemble 1800: Mozart’s Pupil and Beethoven’s Rival The first volume of Hummel’s arrangements of Beethoven’s symphonies! Johann Nepomuk Hummel (1778–1837) was a student of Mozart and a rival of Beethoven. He studied piano with Mozart, counterpoint with Albrechtsberger, vocal music with Salieri, and organ with Haydn. He was also a pianist who was often mentioned in the same breath as Beethoven. He also succeeded his teacher Haydn as Kapellmeister to the Esterházy family. He subsequently served as Kapellmeister in Weimar, occupying a pivotal position during the transitional period from the Classical to the Romantic era. He composed in every genre except symphonies, with a body of work totaling over 200 pieces. Many of these were piano works. Today, thanks to “music playback devices” such as digital music distribution, large-scale works—including operas and symphonies—can be easily enjoyed at home. However, in the mid-18th century, such large-scale music was performed through chamber ensembles or solo performances, for which the works had been arranged for smaller ensembles. Furthermore, these arrangements of large-scale works were a major source of income for publishers of the time. Against this backdrop, Hummel also arranged orchestral works by Mozart and Beethoven for chamber music. Hummel arranged Beethoven’s Symphonies Nos. 1 through 7 for flute, violin, cello, and piano.
