Description:
Celebrating the bicentennial of his birth, the Swiss-born mid-Romantic composer Joachim Raff Leipzig String Quartet performs his third quartet, including a rare encore piece! Joachim Raff was a Swiss composer of the Middle Romantic period. He was highly acclaimed as Liszt's assistant in orchestration. He later became independent and left behind more than 200 works during his lifetime, including 11 symphonies, 8 string quartets, and concertos. However, despite being an excellent pianist, Raff himself rarely gave public concerts, was not good at self-promotion, and had a modest personal life. In his later years, he became director of the Hoch Conservatory in Frankfurt, where he taught younger musicians. To commemorate the bicentennial of Raff's birth, the Leipzig String Quartet has released the third collection of his works, following the first (MDG-30721872) and second (MDG-30722552) collections. In addition to the string octet and piano quintet, two very rare encore pieces are included. The violin and piano versions of Verdi's popular operas "Trovatore" and "Rigoletto," written by Ruff under the name of Josef Kufner, an immensely popular arranger of the time, are a must-hear.
