This work was composed during what is known as the “Forest of Masterpieces,” the most fruitful period of Beethoven’s life. It is a work that is quintessentially Beethoven in its innovation, beginning with a piano solo right from the opening of the first movement. Thanks to Rauma Skride’s compelling piano playing and the orchestra’s excellent support, this performance fully conveys the piece’s charm. Rauma Skride has also recorded “32 Variations on an Original Theme” as a soloist. This work also belongs to Beethoven’s middle period and continues to be performed alongside the many masterpieces of the “Forest of Masterpieces.” It is a groundbreaking set of variations in which classical compositional techniques and skillful variation techniques are masterfully integrated; though it is a highly challenging piece, Rauma Skride’s exceptional structural mastery makes it a delight to listen to. The album also includes the “Consecration” Overture, a late work that is rarely performed. This music for a festive play was composed for C. Miles’s play *The Consecration*, which premiered in 1822 at the opening of the newly built Josephstadt Theater in Vienna. Composed around the same time as the *Missa Solemnis* and the *Ninth Symphony*, it is a rich work that, while concise, offers a glimpse into the composer’s grand vision. King International
