Description:
A collection of chamber music works by the great Swedish composer Berwald, performed by the “Franz Ensemble,” composed primarily of members of the German Kammerphilharmonie Franz Adolf Berwald (1796–1868) was a 19th-century Swedish composer. Although he did not receive favorable reviews during his lifetime, he has undergone a remarkable reappraisal in the 20th century as opportunities for performances and recordings have increased. Born into a musical family in Stockholm, he aspired to become a composer and studied in Berlin, Vienna, and Paris. However, due to financial difficulties, he spent a period of hardship as a composer, working at an orthopedic clinic and managing a glassware factory. In his later years, he returned to Sweden to devote himself to composing; although he secured a professorship at the Stockholm Conservatory, his health deteriorated, and he passed away the following year. Berwald’s works belong to the Early Romantic period and are characterized by simple, scenic depictions and a light, playful style typical of the Nordic tradition. The Franz Ensemble, which will perform the works, consists of members of the Deutsches Kammerphilharmonie: clarinetist Maximilian Krome, principal bassoonist Rie Koyama, concertmaster Sarah Christian, principal cellist Tristan Cornu, and double bassist Juliane Brookmann. The ensemble also brings together a group of talented young musicians, including violist Yuko Hara—based in Bremen, Germany, and active throughout Europe in both solo and chamber music performances—and German pianist Kiveli Derken, who is particularly active in chamber music.
