The complete series of unknown early string quartets by young Mozart! This is the third collection of "Mozart: Early String Quartets" by the Leipzig String Quartet, formed by the principal players of the Leipzig Gewandhaus Orchestra. This time, four new works are performed. This completes the series of early string quartets composed by the 16-year-old Mozart during his travels in Milan and Vienna. It is a question why such youthful and lively works were hidden behind the ten famous "Great Quartets". Escaping from Salzburg, where conventions were strictly enforced, Mozart eagerly absorbed what he needed to know. In Milan, his model was the Italian Sinfonia in three movements, and in Vienna it was the early Viennese classicism in four movements. Mozart imitated them, but in a more accomplished style. The first movement of K.171, for example, has a slow introduction that recurs in the movement's coda.Also, the Menuetto of K.172 begins as a double canon, a very unusual choice for a movement that tends to be a simply constructed dance. Here, the Leipzig String Quartet creates a refined, lean, and beautiful sound from the string quartets of Mozart's youth. This is "classical music" in the best sense of the word. Universal Music/IMS
