The contemporary composer Aribert Reimann, known for his operas such as "Medea" and "Lear," has reconstructed songs by Schumann and Mendelssohn, both Romantic composers. Compared to Mendelssohn's "...oder soll es Tod bedeuten? Compared to "oder soll es Tod bedeuten?", the Schumann and Brahms songs are surprisingly faithful to the originals, although the accompaniment has been replaced by a delicate string quartet, and you can immerse yourself in the world (although of course there is a deep madness lurking nearby). Christiane Elze sings with determination and the Leipzig String Quartet is willing to make noise at times. Universal Music/IMS
