This is a collection of representative organ works by Max Reger, who will celebrate the 100th anniversary of his death in 2016, played on the organ of St. Michael's Church in Hamburg, which is also associated with Reger. Inheriting the German musical tradition of Bach, Beethoven, and Brahms, Reger's works, with their extended harmony and strict counterpoint characteristic of the Romantic period, are full of profound contemplation and religious exultation, although they do not have the flamboyant sound of Liszt's organ music. This album contains three works: the "Chorale Fantasy," a major work from his early years with the motif of the famous chorale "Our God is a Firm Fortress," the "Introduction, Passacaglia and Fugue," a masterpiece from his later years, and the "30 Little Chorale Preludes," which contain endless possibilities in their simple and short compositions. This is a perfect piece to learn about Reger's religious orientation.The organ used in this performance is the magnificent organ of the Michaeler Church, the "most beautiful baroque building" in northern Germany, with which Reger is closely associated, and the high-quality sound recording that captures its beautiful sound is also worthy of special mention.
