As you may know, Zetmaier is renowned as a celebrated violinist, but he has also been making a remarkable name for himself as a conductor in recent years, and here he weaves vibrant music from the Winterthur Musikkollegium. Among these Mendelssohn symphonies, No. 1 was composed when he was just 15 years old. It is a dignified and distinguished piece of music that truly showcases the genius of Mendelssohn, who had already written several accomplished works and was widely recognized as a prodigy. The Fifth Symphony is famously known as the “Reformation” Symphony; although it was actually composed after the First, it was designated as No. 5 for publishing reasons. The piece incorporates motifs from Luther’s chorales. This promises to be a distinctive performance that also incorporates a period-authentic approach. Universal Music/IMS
