While adhering to the orthodox Haydn performance tradition, the ensemble uses classical bows to recreate the music as Haydn likely intended Founded in 1988 by principal players of the prestigious Leipzig Gewandhaus Orchestra—the world’s oldest symphony orchestra—this ensemble boasts a repertoire of approximately 200 works by 55 composers, and has released more than 30 recordings—truly a premier ensemble among premier ensembles. This is the fifth installment in their long-awaited complete Haydn series. This release features three pieces from Haydn’s “Second Tost Quartet”—a work composed for Johann Tost, one of Haydn’s orchestral violinists. All three pieces exhibit rich harmony and represent the pinnacle of the Viennese string quartet tradition. The album also includes “The Lark,” a piece whose theme evokes the song of a lark. While the performance remains grounded in the orthodox approach of previous recordings, the use of replicas of classical bows from the 1700s and 1800s allows the ensemble to recreate the music as Haydn likely intended it.
