Josef Gabriel Rheinberger (1839–1901): Sextet, Nonet The German composer and organist Reinberger was a child prodigy who became the organist at his hometown’s Fadut Parish Church at the age of seven and reportedly performed his first composition the very next year. Consequently, while his organ works are undoubtedly his best-known compositions, this program shines a light on his lesser-known chamber music works. In 1861, at the age of 22, Reinberger composed an octet for wind and strings. Although that work was performed many times and received favorable reviews, the nonet included here is a version created 20 years later, featuring the addition of a flute part and a new adagio, along with numerous revisions. The sextet is one of Reinberger’s very last works, but its beautiful music, brimming with youthful vitality, is well worth attention. Consortium Classicum, boasting a long career spanning 40 years, has released numerous recordings, and its unique repertoire has contributed significantly to the popularization of chamber music. In this recording, they deliver a stunning ensemble performance alongside clarinetist Dieter Krecker.
