Clear Harmonies and Masterful Counterpoint Homilius, a pupil of J.S. Bach who was active primarily in Dresden as a talented organist, was also highly regarded as a composer of church music. Although the Rheinische Kantorei and Hermann Max recorded several of Homilius’s motets about 30 years ago, these works had fallen into complete obscurity, leading to this reissue. The clear harmonies and judiciously employed counterpoint lend the music a refined charm distinct from that of Bach’s works. The occasional poignant expressions—might they be a lament for the churches destroyed during the Seven Years’ War?—make for music of profound depth and richness. Universal Music/IMS
