Tigran Hamasyan, the Armenian prodigy and one of the most talked-about pianists and composers on the contemporary jazz scene. With his recent work composing the music for director Joe Odagiri’s film *The Story of a Boatman*, his career and musicality are now breaking free from the confines of jazz. Now, he is releasing a new album. *THECALLWITHIN* is his first studio album in about two years, following the 2018 EP *FORGYUMRI*. While his 2017 album *ANANCIENTOBSERVER* and 2018’s *FORGYUMRI* drew inspiration from his homeland of Armenia, this new work explores his “inner world.” His sources of inspiration include poetry, Armenian folk tales and legends from both before and after the arrival of Christianity, astronomy and geometry, ancient Armenian designs, petroglyphs (rock carvings), and cinematography—a wide range of subjects from various eras and fields that captivate Tigran. Using these themes, he blurs the boundaries between historical fact and the realm of fantasy through his work. “A work of art, a poem, or a melody born from ineffable longing, latent awareness, and the joy that fills the body does not arise from any concrete reason, but from humanity’s quest to explore the invisible and the mysteries of God,” he says of this album. Tigran himself produced the album. The 10 tracks feature Evan Marien (electric bass) and Arthur Nartek (drums), who has worked with Tigran in the past. Additionally, the progressive rock-style track “Vortէx” features Torsin Abasi, guitarist for the American technical metal band Animals as Leaders, while “OurFilm” features improvisational vocalist, folk singer, storyteller/pianist Areni Aghbabian, and cellist Artem Manukian, who, like Tigran, hails from Armenia. Described by The Guardian as “a phenomenal pianist, an irrepressible entertainer, a promising experimentalist who wields high-tech equipment with ease, and a creative world music composer," has created his latest work, *The Call Within*, by listening to the voice within his heart.
