Two first recordings of Steve Reich's works, which were first included in the Reich BOX and distributed digitally, are now available on a long-awaited stand-alone CD in limited quantities, in response to requests from many listeners. Steve Reich's "Jacob's Ladder" for voice and ensemble was premiered by the New York Philharmonic and Synergy Vocals in October 2023. The work musically depicts the scene of Jacob's dream described in Genesis 28:12, in which angels ascend and descend the ladder connecting earth and heaven. Jacob's Ladder" consists of four short sections based on biblical passages and four longer sections that expand on them. Approximately 60% of the piece is instrumental, and the rest is vocal. This composition allows the wordless music to symbolically represent the ascension and stillness of the angels. Reich said of the work, "Jacob's Ladder is essentially an instrumental work, with the vocal part making up only 40% of the total.The rest is wordless musical commentary, depicting in music the movement of angels ascending and descending the ladder that connects heaven and earth." Traveler's Prayer, begun in 2020 and completed during the pandemic, is a serene and spiritually profound piece for voice and instrumental ensemble. It is based on the traditional Jewish "prayer for travel" (Tefilat HaDerech) and uses three short excerpts from the Old Testament (Genesis, Exodus, and Psalms) as its text, which are treated as prayers for safe travel, not only for daily transportation, but also for "the journey of life and after death" as symbolically They are treated as a passage. Musically, the work uses minimalist diction, but also makes extensive use of a very free and intricate canon form, while respecting the spirituality of the text, the rhythm and tempo of the work are extremely gentle and meditative. Each recording was made on the same day of the performance at a different time without audience. The recording date of "Traveler's Player" in the original booklet is printed incorrectly as April 21-22, 2023.The Japanese explanation included in the package states that this is a mistake and the correct recording date is given.
