Description:
A recording of Klemperer’s *The Magic Flute* at the Royal Opera House. This was a time when the Royal Opera House had gained worldwide renown, with Solti taking over as music director in 1961 and the company touring Munich and West Berlin in 1970. Klemperer (1885–1973) conducted “Fidelio” here in 1961 to rave reviews, and in response to the high expectations, he returned in 1962 to conduct “The Magic Flute.” However, Klemperer was particular about the staging as well; although the dialogue was performed in German, the London audience found it difficult to accept German without subtitles. Furthermore, he and Sutherland disagreed on the somewhat slow tempo, and there are moments where the performance feels a bit disjointed. While his 1964 recording with the Philharmonia Orchestra is well known (featuring a cast including Gedda and Pop), this 1962 recording is a valuable document that allows one to sense Klemperer’s “strength.” King International
