Description:
Thank you for your patience! We are thrilled to announce that we are finally carrying new releases from Testament, the leading historical label whose distribution had been suspended for quite some time!! Tower Records is bringing these releases to our customers in Japan as quickly as possible through our exclusive channels. There has long been a deep and intimate connection between the French musical maestro Désiré-Émile Angerbrechts and Debussy’s masterpiece *Pelléas et Mélisande*. Although Angerbrechts was raised in a musical family, he actually didn’t have much passion for music at first. The moment that launched his illustrious career was when he heard the premiere of *Pelléas et Mélisande* (conducted by Messager) at the Paris Opera. Deeply moved and impressed by this work, Angerbrechts went on to become a leading figure in the French music scene, performing and recording the piece numerous times. He was, of course, close friends with Debussy and received much direct advice from him regarding the performance of this work. However, the world premiere recording of *Pelléas* was made by Desomier, a fact that remains somewhat puzzling to listeners. Records indicate that even after attaining the pinnacle of his career as chief conductor of the Orchestre National de France, he remained troubled by the fact that he had not been involved in the world premiere recording. It is also highly intriguing that the first recording of this quintessentially French pairing—Angerbrechts and *Pelléas*—was realized by the BBC in the United Kingdom. Furthermore, although the project was commissioned by the BBC, the orchestra was changed to the Philharmonia Orchestra for various reasons. Tracing the origins of this change, the conductor was originally scheduled to be Ansermet but was replaced by Angerbrecht for some reason. There were also several changes to the cast of singers. Did some unseen, powerful force drive this miraculous recording? Thus, this fateful performance took place, and it is now being released here as the first-ever recording. This fateful recording is of the highest standard, with meticulous attention to detail evident even in the French accents and the treatment of consonants in the singing. Danko, capable of precise, Mozartian phrasing reminiscent of Mary Garden; and Morane, a quintessential “Martin baritone” whose colorful consonants led Angerbrechts to describe them as “transparent.” Furthermore, one cannot help but be amazed by the Philharmonia Orchestra—Britain’s finest—and their profound understanding of French music, as well as their masterful rendering of Debussy’s unique rhythms and the shifting interplay of light and shadow that lies at the heart of *Pelléas*. Having already been released in the UK and France, where it has received rave reviews, this recording is rapidly establishing itself as the definitive version of the work.
