Kubelik’s 1957 revival sheds new light on the work! Berlioz’s late-career masterpiece, *Les Troyens*, was performed only in fragments during the composer’s lifetime—primarily due to its sheer scale—and it took over a century for it to be staged in its entirety. This precious recording of the 1957 production at Covent Garden, conducted by Kubelik, has now been restored. With Blanche Seaborn as Dido, Vickers—hailed as the “Post-Delmonaco”—as Aeneas, and Amy Shuard, one of the 20th century’s leading British dramatic sopranos, as Cassandra, this production—featuring a stellar cast of singers—was a landmark event that paved the way for the revival of *Les Troyens* as a five-act opera. A full performance of *Les Troyens* took place in Karlsruhe in 1890, 21 years after Berlioz’s death, though this was a German-language production. Subsequently, in 1899, Part 1, “The Fall of Troy,” was staged at the Opéra de Paris. In 1921, a heavily abridged full-length version was performed at the same venue, and this recording captures the 1957 production of that version at London’s Covent Garden.
