Description:

Richard Strauss Live Concerts of His Own Works! In 1947, two years before his death, Richard Strauss conducted two concerts of his own works at the ripe old age of 83. These two concerts, which can truly be called "testaments," were the last time Strauss conducted in public. At the end of CD2, we have included an excerpt from the original "Don Juan" recording before any modifications were made, so that you can compare how the remastering was done. ============================================== [From the booklet] ... The highlight of the festival was the concert at the Royal Albert Hall on Sunday evening, October 19.The program for this concert consisted of the symphonic poem "Don Juan," "Burleske" for piano and orchestra, and "Home Symphony," with a newly orchestrated waltz from the opera "Der Rosenkavalier" as an encore, conducted by Strauss himself. The Philharmonia Orchestra performed a newly orchestrated waltz from the opera "Der Rosenkavalier" under the direction of Strauss himself. ・・・・Omission...The 7,000 people who filled the Royal Albert Hall that evening rose to their feet and greeted Strauss with thunderous applause as he slowly made his way to the podium. The atmosphere in the hall was tense. And then came the best performance of the evening. The Times reviewer wrote: "Dr. Strauss as a conductor has never been a great conductor. The Times critic wrote: "As a conductor, Dr. Strauss is not an expressionist. His left hand hardly moved at all, and his right hand seemed to do no more than mark the beat. But how precise were the beats, how limitless was the range of expression created by the subtle changes in the movement of the conductor's stick! How infinite is the range of expression created by the subtle changes in the movement of the conductor's stick, and how, despite his advanced age of 83, his command of the orchestra and his ability to extract from it exactly what he wants has not diminished. For the overnight work of one man who was famous before most of his vast audience was even born, it is remarkable." On October 29, at the end of his visit to England, Strauss conducted once more at the Albert Hall. This time, after opening the concert with Mozart's "Jupiter" Symphony, conducted by Sir Adrian Boult, Strauss conducted the BBC Symphony Orchestra in a single symphonic poem, "Till Eulenspiegel's Merry Prank. It had been exactly 50 years since Strauss first conducted "Till" in England. The Times commented, "The aged composer can still command an orchestra with a minimum of proficient movement. And it was precisely at this concert that the composer famously said before going on stage, "Well, old horse, let's leave the stables again. ...[comments courtesy of Universal IMS]---.
