July and August of 1957 were a leisurely time for the Philharmonia Orchestra. Members enjoyed holidays and freedom. But from the end of August, the focus was back on the music, and after two days of rehearsals in London, the orchestra left for Edinburgh on August 27 for three concerts in three days under three different conductors. Now, the Martineau piano concerto recorded here is from the European premiere of the piece. The pianist Filchouny was a friend of Martineau's and was the premiere performer of his concertos Nos. 2 and 3, as well as this one, No. 4. The world premiere of No. 4 was given in New York in October 1956, followed by the European premiere in 1957. In September 1948, Kubelík defected from the Czech Republic to the West, and in his early years he made many recordings with the Philharmonia Orchestra on the HMV label.In 1952, his contract with EMI expired, and he signed a contract with DECCA and began recording intensively with the Vienna Philharmonic, but in 1957, with the complete Brahms symphonies in progress, he was actually rarely seen with the Philharmonia Orchestra. However, this is a very exciting performance. After all, Dvořák and Martineau were important composers to Kubelík, and he often performed with the Philksný. The fact that this program begins with Dvořák's "Symphonic Variations" is surely enough to set Kubelík's Czech spirit ablaze. [Comments courtesy of Universal IMS.]
