Since his sudden death on July 29, 1970, Barbirolli's discography has expanded considerably. Now, more than ever, we are able to examine the details of his discography and broadcast sources. He left behind a vast collection of broadcast material for the BBC and Continental Radio over a 27-year period beginning in 1937. These recordings were made when he made guest appearances with the Halle Orchestra and other orchestras, but they were not known as a commercial discography at the time. The two symphonies by Cyperius are among these recordings, the first studio recording of No. 2 and No. 5 made with the Royal Philharmonic Orchestra in 1962, and the live recording of No. 5 from the Henry Wood Promenade Concert in 1968. Sibelius was an important part of Barbirolli's repertoire, and he actively featured his symphonies in his concerts from a young age.He has always been with Sibelius, as he performed the No. 2 symphony many times in Chicago and New York in 1940, performed all seven symphonies in chronological order after becoming music director of the Halle Orchestra, and featured the No. 7 symphony in his first concert with the Berlin Symphony Orchestra in 1961.
