January 3, 1967: A concert tour from the height of Du Pré’s career! World premiere recording! Jacqueline du Pré, the cellist who died young. In January 2005, she would have celebrated her 60th birthday (her 60th anniversary!). Even had she lived, she would still be only 60 years old. Moreover, because illness prevented her from performing for most of her later years, we are once again reminded just how brief her active musical career truly was. In the 60th-anniversary issue of BBC Music Magazine, Rostropovich remarked: “It was as if she had been born clutching the cello. The instrument was, like her arms and legs, an organic part of her very body. Therefore, when she played, there was absolutely nothing to interrupt the flow of the music. Her emotions became music itself and reached the audience directly. Even today, you can still sense this natural talent when you listen to her recordings.” It can be said that the “natural talent” he referred to blossomed even more fully in this Prague live performance of Elgar. Barbirolli, who was one of the foremost interpreters of Elgar’s works in Britain, began his musical career as a cellist. His conducting style, rooted in a thorough understanding of the cello’s characteristics—a quality unmatched by other conductors—provides even more superb support for Du Pré’s cello playing than it did during their collaboration on the EMI recording in August 1965. From the leisurely opening of the first movement to the very last note, you can hear Du Pré’s finest cello performance, soaring as if taking flight across the sky. This live performance also marks what was likely the pinnacle of Du Pré’s happiness, coming just before her marriage to Barenboim. Please enjoy this rare and exceptional live performance, in which her extraordinary talent shines through in every detail.
