Special 2 for 1 price!　Toscanini left Europe in 1937 and moved to the United States, but he still visited London regularly, giving a total of 25 concerts with the BBC Symphony Orchestra in the three years leading up to the outbreak of World War II in 1939 (from standard works ranging from Bach to Sibelius to rare British works, Elgar, V. Williams, etc.).Some of these recordings have been vividly restored by the BBC and TESTAMENT's excellent mastering technology, and have been applauded by fans (Brahms: SYM.2, etc. SBT1015), but now comes the highlight of the series of concerts, the "Verdi Requiem. Verdi's Requiem has been a special work for Toscanini since 1874, and according to his bio, between 1902 and 1951, he gave 30 performances of the work around the world, each one of them in Maestra.On disc, we can hear several performances, including the RCA recording of January 27, 1951 with the NBC Symphony Orchestra, which has become a definitive masterpiece, and the performance on June 17, 1950, which marked the historic return of the orchestra to La Scala in Milan. The May 27, 1938 performance included on this disc was also released by an Italian minor label, but the recording was in less than flattering condition, and only with this release will the greatness of the performance (for those who have heard it on an earlier disc, it is as if it were a different performance) be recognized. The 71-year-old Maestro was not necessarily in perfect condition at the time of the performance. Just two days before the concert, he told a close friend, "I'm tired, I can't sleep. I can't sleep.My shoulder hurts," he wrote in his letter, and the next day, "My shoulder hurts so much, the Requiem is killing me...," he said, "I love this work more and more, and I think my performance is exactly as Verdi envisioned it. The day after the concert, he expressed his satisfaction in typical Toscanini fashion: "The disastrous final rehearsal had robbed me of sleep and peace of mind, but last night's performance brought it all full circle. Needless to say, the performance was a rapturous success.　The liner notes for this concert were written by Harvey Sachs, the well-known author of "The Age of Toscanini. This is a very interesting book by a man who was directly involved with Toscanini, so be sure to check it out.
