Beethoven with Schelling and Klemperer! This is the first appearance of Beethoven's Violin Concerto by Schelling and Klemperer, following the Beethoven Zycles in the autumn of 1957 (the wonderful performance can be heard in "The Ninth" [SBT 1177] and the concerto with Arrau [SBT2 1351]). (Beethoven Festival 1959, which was conducted by Beinum in 1958 due to a serious burn that was said to be a matter of life and death for Klemperer). Klemperer conducted a total of eight concerts that year, performing nine symphonies, an overture, and three piano concertos (solo by Anthony di Bonaventura), but his performance of the Violin Concerto with Schelling as soloist left a particularly strong impression on the audience.The Daily Telegraph of the time praised Schelling's performance, saying, "How many violinists today can tackle this work with such power, brilliance, and resilience? In fact, Schelling's unique sense of structure, lustrous tone, and above all, his aristocratic grace overwhelm the entire work, keeping the listener riveted to the very end. Furthermore, Klemperer's support is terrific! He recorded Beethoven's Violin Concerto with Menuhin for EMI in 1966, but despite numerous rehearsals and demonstrations, the result was never satisfactory for him. He also played the same piece solo with Tossy Spivakovsky during the 1957 Ticles, and there were requests for a recording, but Klemperer refused.It may be extremely difficult for the average violinist to fully understand Klemperer's uncompromisingly rigorous approach to Beethoven's scores. (Schelling, who was 41 years old at the time, was able to play to Klemperer's high demands.) As mentioned above, the year 1959 was the pivotal year for Klemperer's phoenix-like revival from his fatal burn the previous year and his transformation into a great maestro. In fact, the performance heard here also begins with the first movement in a terribly tense orchestral tension, and after being struck by the woodwinds, which stand out even more than in the EMI recording, and the powerful timpani hits, the performance proceeds through the sublime second movement, which is so noble that only Klemperer could have achieved it. After a sublime second movement, the third movement ends with a furious coda.（The perfect musical form, the brilliant tone, and above all, the high-minded and noble spirit are the very manifestation of the ideal Beethoven that Klemperer envisioned. The "Chaconne" recorded together with the "Beethoven Chaconne" is a live studio performance for the BBC in 1967 (the same year as the famous recording of the complete work for DG). Here, too, Schelling's earnest attitude toward music strikes the listener.
