TESTAMENT, a label known for releasing high-quality historical recordings, is set to release a dream collection for fans: live recordings of Mahler performed by Barbirolli and the Berlin Philharmonic. Barbirolli conducted several concerts of Mahler’s symphonies with the Berlin Philharmonic, all of which were hugely successful. TESTAMENT is preparing to release recordings of Mahler’s Symphonies Nos. 2, 3, and 6 from these live performances, and the first in this series is Symphony No. 2, “Resurrection,” recorded live on June 3, 1965. From the raging opening of the first movement, the music unfolds with such intensity that it feels as though Barbirolli’s very soul has possessed the Berlin Philharmonic. With abundant use of agogic accents and tremendous tension, a passionate performance unfolds. In particular, Barbirolli’s growls can be heard clearly throughout the fifth movement, conveying the intensity of his emotional investment in a way that genuinely stirs the listener’s heart. It is no exaggeration to say that an irreplaceable, rare masterpiece has emerged for “Resurrection,” one of Mahler’s most popular works.
