Long known for exploring techniques such as just intonation and microtonal harmonies, Horse Lords incorporated the human voice into their compositions for the first time on 2026s Demand to Be Taken to Heaven Alive! Nina Guo and Evelyn Saylor mainly appear during the albums brief interludes and "Rotation" pieces, and their voices are electronically manipulated and stretched, transforming into additional sonic tools for the band to play around with. Bits of vocal-based intro "Eureka 378-B" are shredded and folded into the elliptical patterns of "Brain of the Firm," which readjusts and becomes more complex and logic-defying during its final section. "First Galactic Utopia" starts out slowly and gradually gains a sparkling glow as it spirals upward. "Before the Law" attaches a horn-based drone to a precise, carefully executed rhythm which doesnt change much, yet somehow feels sturdier as it continues. "After the Last Sky" slows the rhythm down and lets the horns and guitar have a deeply intellectual conversation with each other. After an intense back-and-forth, the instruments seem to surrender and lapse into drones which bleed into each other. The albums last three songs are much heavier on electronics, and theyre among the weirdest and most exciting tracks. "A City Yet to Come" has a sort of warped down-home feel, punctuated by skronky horns, sudden synth sweeps, and choppy vocals. By the end, it all gets caught up in thick, sloppy waves which somehow feel like a car wash spin cycle. "Second Galactic Utopia" is a steamier, stranger, more playful sequel to the first. The albums title track originated from the groups collaboration with composer Arnold Dreyblatt, and it dices more vocals and electronic tones over a head-spinning rhythm, resulting in a friendly form of minimalism-into-maximalism. Horse Lords music is both demanding and rewarding, and the group continues to innovate while remaining hopeful and celebrating life. ~ Paul Simpson
