Oscillating between the digital and the physical, memory and recording, confession and evasion, Frances Chang translates the uncertain realms that lie deep within herself into sound. “beenthinkingboutconfession,” where cinematic scale intersects with bedroom intimacy and orchestral exaltation blends with experimental electroacoustics, is a thrilling and beautiful “coming-of-age film of sound” in which voice, piano, memory, and fantasy layer upon one another. Born in Chicago to immigrant parents, Frances Chang’s sensibility toward sound was shaped by the interplay between serendipitous auditory experiences and recorded sounds. Memories of dancing to her mother playing the piano in the living room as a child, the shock of hearing her own singing voice recorded on a My First Sony toy for the first time, and the films and literature she grew up with all shaped her interest in the narrative quality, introspection, and sense of “being transported to somewhere else” in her music. Her music is always imbued with a cinematic quality; at times it resonates like the score of a psychological thriller or a fantasy epic, while at other times it takes on the intimacy of an indie film depicting a coming-of-age story. The sensation—brought on by the medieval-style RPG *King’s Quest*, which she loved as a child—that the digital world feels vaster than reality underlies the “uncanny valley”-like world-building that pervades *beenthinkingaboutconfession* as a whole. Chang herself describes this work as “a kind of nested structure of perspectives situated between the digital and the physical.” Early musical influences such as Madonna’s “Like a Prayer” and *Jesus Christ Superstar* served not only as cultural touchstones but also as demonstrations of the infinite potential of the voice to convey emotion. Chang, who taught herself music almost entirely on her own, possesses a vocal quality that feels intuitive, as if she is constantly searching for something. While her musical practice was cultivated primarily in her bedroom, her formative live experiences took place in the underground punk, emo, and post-hardcore scenes as a member of the band giantpeach. She subsequently released experimental solo works, spoken-word pieces, and instrumental tracks. Her 2022 album *supportyourlocalnihilist* was the first song-based album Chang released under her real name and marked a return to a surrealistic and intimate sound. On the 2024 album *PsychedelicAnxiety*, he brought in a drummer and bassist, establishing a lineup that would later evolve into a live trio. He has also been active in the field of film music, composing unique scores for *Sunset Seduction* (directed by Charles de Agustin, 2024) and *Where Can We Be Found?* (directed by Eco Rove, 2023), weaving melodic threads into a soundscape characterized by noise, drones, and musique concrète.
