Description:
A collection of works for piano and orchestra written by three contemporary composers from around Russia. Ustvolskaya is a Petrograd-born female composer who studied under and was strongly influenced by Shostakovich. Although her works have always been compared to Shostakovich's, her unique and mysterious style is strongly favored by some connoisseurs. The "Concerto" is somewhat tonal, but its sound rows have a mysterious texture, and the timpani, which never blend with each other, add a unique flavor. Other pieces on the program include Silvestrov's "Postlude" and "Hymn," both of which have a strong Romantic influence, and Kancheli's "SIO," which makes effective use of Georgian folk songs from his native Georgia. All the pieces are familiar and easy on the ear. Recorded in 2015 by the Stuttgart Chamber Orchestra and others, conducted by Thomas Sanderling. (C)RS
