Description:
Based on the 2000 Danish film *Dancer in the Dark*—which garnered attention for starring Björk—this new opera, *Selma Jekova*, features an original libretto and music by the up-and-coming composer Luzas (1949–). The film itself—with its innovative camerawork, musical scenes interspersed throughout, and Björk’s music—was highly acclaimed and became a talking point in Japan as well; all eyes are now on how this work has been adapted for the stage. Selma is an immigrant from the Czech Republic who suffers from an eye condition. Her son, Gene, has inherited her illness. Their neighbor, Bill, has his sights set on the money Selma has scrimped and saved from their meager livelihood to pay for her son’s surgery. The story flashes back from the scene of Selma’s funeral—a woman who committed a crime to protect her son. Every time Selma puts on her glasses, reality and fantasy blend together, and just like in the film, the stage instantly transforms into a dazzling musical. Though it’s a story with a predictable ending and little hope, you’ll find yourself drawn in until the very end. It’s an intense production condensed into 70 minutes. Naxos Japan
