Description:
Nilsen's youthful enthusiasm filled the first performance of his Symphony No. 1 in 1894. The influence of Johan Svendsen, whom Nilsen looked up to as his mentor at the time, can be felt in the rough-hewn but progressive atmosphere of this piece, which was highly acclaimed in the newspapers of the time. Symphony No. 4 is one of Nilsen's masterpieces, and was written in the midst of World War I. The work was performed by conductor Alan Gilbert, who was also a member of the orchestra. Conductor Alan Gilbert's performance was extremely smart, carefully removing the hazy feeling from Nilsen's music and conveying smart sound and direct emotion.
