Introducing a collaborative work for unaccompanied choir and recorder by four contemporary composers. It’s true that the combination of recorder and choir is not uncommon. The recorder, with its timbre similar to the human voice, was widely used during the Baroque era, and many composers have sought to capture the magic of its sound. However, by taking this collaboration a step further, the composers have succeeded in creating an entirely new timbre. “The Nightingale” by the Latvian composer Plaunys is a work based on the well-known Andersen fairy tale, and it makes extensive use of a mystical sound that could only be achieved with the recorder. The pieces by Rasmussen and Berz, which seem to offer a glimpse into the depths of the human heart, and Brune’s piece, inspired by a lark soaring high in the sky, are painted onto a sonic canvas with stunning expressiveness by the richly colored choir and the recorder. The high sound quality of the SACD is also captivating, and the rich reverberation adds a special touch that invites a profound emotional response. Naxos Japan
