There are quite a few composers whose work spans such a wide range of styles that one’s assessment of them can vary completely depending on which piece one listens to first; Lango (1893–1952) is perhaps the prime example of this. If you listen to this collection of piano works from the beginning, you’re bound to sense a lineage stretching from Chopin to Grieg and Sibelius, no matter how you listen. However, “Summer Memories” reveals only a small part of this dreamer’s personality, and many listeners will likely be taken aback by the entirely different sonic world presented in his next collection, “Music from the Abyss.” Langó’s music seeks radical sounds and sensuous expression; he pours his ingenuity into both the titles and the music itself, and at times, his work even exudes an air of mystery. I truly hope you’ll take the time to listen to it carefully. Naxos Japan
