Yorgos Kumenakis (1959–) has in recent years placed Greek traditional music at the center of his creative work, transforming its memories and energy into contemporary soundscapes. This album presents a condensed overview of his work through four pieces centered on the saxophone. At times he borrows folk songs directly; at others, he reconstructs them by tracing only their memorable colors and rhythms. Through repetition, transformation, and fragmentation, the music transforms the traces of old songs into new forms of expression. This album breathes new life into the fusion of Eastern and Western elements, the sustained tones of Byzantine chant, and the spirit of table songs and Smyrna folk songs through the saxophone’s powerful expressiveness.
