This album presents a program that traces, through short pieces and arrangements, how the viola has established itself as a solo instrument since the modern era. Using viola arrangements published in Russia from the 1950s to the 1980s as a starting point, the program sheds light on Russian viola culture—centered on Vadim Borisovsky—and the lineage of modern viola players such as Primrose and Tartis. When the famous melodies of Paganini, Schumann, Tchaikovsky, Prokofiev, and others are transposed to the viola’s range and timbre, their brilliance, melancholy, and drama emerge in a new light. The performer, Vladimir Bukáč, is one of the Czech Republic’s leading violists. A virtuoso who has long been active internationally as a member of the Talich Quartet, he currently teaches at the Dresden University of Music and the Royal Conservatory of Brussels. This album was conceived after he came across a large collection of Russian viola scores sent to him by a friend in St. Petersburg, and the recording itself serves as a personal tribute to these master violists. With the addition of two new works by his colleague Adam Skoumal, this album is more than just a collection of arrangements; it paints a portrait of the viola that spans from the past to the present.
