Description:
The boundary where "written notation" and "oral tradition" intersect in European early music. Discover the true nature of the minstrels through a diverse array of early and folk instruments! A program exploring the intersection of "oral tradition" and "written notation" in early European music. Rather than following a chronological order, the album is structured into two sections based on modes of musical transmission: “The Ignorant Minstrels” and “The Learned Minstrels.” Until Petrucci invented the printing of sheet music in 1501, access to written music was limited primarily to a select group of singers in churches and courts. In contrast, the menestrel (itinerant musicians) honed their skills through oral tradition, adapting flexibly from popular dances to the private chambers of the nobility. The first half of this work attempts to reconstruct the lost oral instrumental repertoire, applying the stylistic elements of traditional music preserved in Eastern Europe and elsewhere to medieval and Renaissance pieces. In the second half, “The Cultured Minstrels,” we trace how cultured court composers such as Lully, Marais, and Viseux were influenced by the dance music of the minstrels and incorporated it as an artistic style to replace counterpoint. The performance is by the ensemble “eXaQuier,” which makes extensive use of a wide range of instruments, from early instruments such as the vièle and cittern to Eastern folk instruments such as the oud and ney. Based on the oral transmission process of the time—reconstruction from memory—this recording is of high historical value, having restored the “distinctive accents and articulations of dance music” that are often homogenized in modern interpretations.
