The two piano sonatas of Op. 34 are monumental works considered among his greatest masterpieces. According to the testimony of his pupil Ludwig Berger, the First Sonata was originally conceived as a concerto and is characterized by brilliant, technically demanding passages that challenge the left hand as well. Furthermore, the cantabile quality of the slow movement clearly foreshadows the nocturnes of John Field, Clementi’s beloved pupil. On the other hand, the *12 Monferrine*, Op. 49, transforms traditional 6/8-time folk dances from the Piedmont region of Italy into refined miniatures for the keyboard. By juxtaposing the contrasting forms of a symphonic sonata and compact dance music suited for the salon setting, Clementi’s masterful craftsmanship—born of his deep understanding of the piano’s mechanics and the market demands of the time—is brought into sharp relief. Born in 1996, Italian pianist Giulia Tonio studied at institutions such as the Royal Academy of Music in London and is a highly accomplished artist with a track record of winning prizes at numerous international competitions.
