Description:
From the 16th to the 18th century, music featuring multiple organs developed in Italian churches in parallel with the growth and establishment of the polychoral (multi-choir) repertoire. This album is an excellent project that brings that music back to life today. The recording features two historic organs still in use at the Basilica of San Petronio in Bologna—a 1475 instrument by Lorenzo da Prato and a 1596 instrument by Baldassare Malamini. The three-dimensional sound created by the interplay between these two instruments, positioned at a distance from one another, vividly recreates the musical space of that era. The program consists primarily of canzonas by Giovanni Battista Grillo and Pietro Lappi, along with dance pieces, toccatas, ricercars, and keyboard arrangements of works originally by Adrian Willaert. While these pieces were not necessarily written for two organs, this recording features arrangements based on that specific configuration. The performers are Montserrat Trent (aged 100!), a leading figure in Spain and a veteran who has long been at the forefront of research and performance on historical organs, and Matteo Bonfilioli, an Italian organist active in both performance and research based on historical performance practice. Combining a deep understanding of historical styles with rich musicality, the two artists paint a musical dialogue that transcends time and space.
