The origins and pinnacle of the Classical period, woven together by two flutes and a double bass. A debut album by Spain’s up-and-coming Trio Falla that unravels the historical context! This is the debut album by Trio Falla, a Spanish ensemble formed in Cologne in 2023 featuring the unusual combination of two flutes and a double bass. Combining works by the little-known Spanish composer Antonio Rodríguez de Ita (c. 1722–1787) with those of the master Joseph Haydn, the album presents a musical dialogue from the Baroque to the Classical period. Rodríguez de Ita was a composer who, in the conservative Spain of his time, demonstrated an avant-garde approach reminiscent of the Mannheim School, such as dispensing with the basso continuo to give independent melodic roles to the instruments. The 1751 “Instrumental Songs (Canciones Instrumentales)” included here are written in a homophonic pre-Classical language that can be seen as a precursor to the “Lieder ohne Worte” later established by Mendelssohn; for this album, flutist Pau Cosó has arranged the pieces himself to suit the trio format. Haydn’s “London Trios,” on the other hand, were composed during his second stay in London in 1794, some 40 years later. These are sophisticated works written for entertainment at social gatherings, capitalizing on the appeal of the flute, which enjoyed immense popularity among British music lovers at the time.
