The 100th Anniversary of György Kurtág’s Birth! bastillemusique Presents a Commemorative Release: “The Complete String Quartets”! On February 19, 2026, Hungarian composer György Kurtág—still active today—finally turned 100. While new recordings of Kurtág’s works are being released one after another, primarily by Hungarian labels such as BMC Records, the Berlin-based luxury label “bastillemusique”—which has consistently brought high-quality contemporary music albums to the world—is finally releasing a commemorative album for Kurtág’s 100th birthday. Recorded with the Béla Quartet—founded in 2006 by four graduates of the Paris Conservatory who have dedicated the past 20 years to performing Kurtág’s works—this album features his string quartets, which represent the very core of his creative output. This is the first major work composed by Kurtág after he returned to Budapest in 1958 following the end of the Hungarian Uprising; he assigned it the opus number Op. 1 to mark the start of a “new chapter in his life.” This collection spans more than half a century of Kurtág’s string quartet works, from the *String Quartet* to *Secreta*, composed in 2011 when he was 85 years old. Including the world premiere recording of *Corportur* alongside intimate miniatures, this program offers a comprehensive overview of the composer’s intellectual history and creative evolution, marking the 100th anniversary of his birth as an opportunity to delve anew into the inner world of Kurtág. The substantial booklet, a hallmark of “bastillemusique,” is once again a highlight of this release. In addition to program notes by musicologist Tobias Brück, the booklet features interviews by label producer Sebastian Zolte with members of the Béla Quartet and the recording producer, making this a definitive release not only for its performance and sound quality but also for its documentary value.
