This landmark first solo studio album, released in 1985, defined his career. A groundbreaking work that predated Paul Simon’s masterpiece *Graceland* by blending indigenous African rhythms with modern production, it stands as a monumental, ahead-of-its-time post-modern pop masterpiece that collided local vocals with sharp drumming in the dawn of sampling technology. The album features 10 tracks, including the anthem “KOTEJA (OHBOLILLA)” with Raylema’s powerful vocals, “GONGROCK” with a ground-shaking groove, and “SERENGETILONGWALK,” which evokes the winds of the savanna. The dynamism of the percussion, which stands out precisely because it has been stripped of all ornamentation, still radiates a fresh brilliance even after 40 years, drawing the listener into an unknown sonic space.
