Composer Hugo Alfven was also an active conductor, leading groups such as the Uppsala male chorus "Orfej Drengal" and the mixed voice "Siryan Choir". The works that Alveen composed or arranged for his choirs were widely sung and have become part of the repertoire of choirs in many countries as beautiful works that symbolize "Sweden, the Land of Song. This album contains 24 of his major choral works, including compositions written for male chorus that Alveen reworked for mixed chorus and arrangements of Swedish folk songs. The Gustav Sjökvist Chamber Choir is an ensemble formed in 1994 by alumni of the Royal College of Music in Stockholm. Known for its collaborations with baritone Håkan Hagegård, guitarist Mats Bellistrem, and jazz pianist and composer Nils Lindberg, the ensemble has toured and recorded many CDs. Conductor Gustaf Sjokvist (1943-) studied with Erik Ericsson at the Royal College of Music, receiving degrees in church music fringe performance and conducting.He studied orchestral conducting with Sixten Ehring and Karl Münchinger.
