Description:
Placebo, the great masters of documenting the human condition, have found fertile ground in 2021 in their unique way of examining both its flaws and its beauty. Crawling out into a landscape of pandemics, intolerance, division, technological saturation, and impending environmental catastrophe, the voices they unleash are so important in contemporary discourse that nothing could be more appropriate for the world to hear the stories told here. On "Surrounded By Spies," the latest song they have shared with the world along with information about the album, they strike a powerful blow against the infringement of human freedom with the magnetic force of a quietly burning flame. Here, the sense that the walls around us seem to be closing in on us is present, as Brian Morko's deft lyrical delivery blends with a creeping, claustrophobic sensation. Commenting on the single, Brian said, "I started out writing these lyrics. I started writing these lyrics when I learned that my neighbors were keeping tabs on me for some nefarious group. Then I started thinking about how our privacy has been violated since the introduction of CCTV cameras around the world employing anthropocentric facial recognition technology. With the proliferation of the Internet and cell phones, virtually every user has become a paparazzi, a spectator of people's lives, and then provides our personal information to huge multinational corporations whose sole purpose is to exploit us." "In this song, conceived by William S. Burroughs, "In this song, I use the cut-up technique invented by William S. Burroughs and popularized in modern times by David Bowie. The song is a true story told through the lens of paranoia, a complete disgust with the values of modern society and the deification of surveillance capitalism. The narrator is tormented by despair and fear, and is in complete conflict with his newfound god of progress and money. Let's listen to their latest album and see how Placebo, who have been defying the currents of the times and continuing to take a stance as the antithesis of the times, will stimulate the modern society...
