Birgit Nilsson (1918–2005) made her opera debut in 1946, made her opera debut as Agathe in *Der Freischütz* at the Royal Opera in Stockholm, and the following year, she attracted attention in *Macbeth*, conducted by Fritz Busch. She made her international debut in 1951 at the Glyndebourne Festival, singing the role of Elettra in *Idomeneo*, conducted by Busch. She went on to perform at the Vienna State Opera, the Bayreuth Festival, the Bavarian State Opera, La Scala in Milan, the Metropolitan Opera, and the Royal Opera in Ventgården, becoming a respected and beloved figure as Sweden’s most internationally renowned soprano. The year 2018 marks the 100th anniversary of her birth in Västra Kalp, Skåne. A box set to be released by Blubell Records—which has been compiling albums of Nilsson’s Swedish recordings—features arias and “scenes” from the roles that constituted her most important repertoire, drawn from recordings made between 1949 and 1961 for labels such as Decca, RCA, and EMI, as well as live recordings from the Royal Opera in Stockholm, all made between 1949 and 1961.
