Muzikawi, a hot label based in Ethiopia and Sweden that is redefining the appeal of Ethiopian music, has released another astonishing recording! Tilaye Gebre, one of Ethiopia's most soulful saxophonists and composers, recorded with the Dahlak Band in the late 1970s and released only on cassette. The album features not only Ethiojazz, but also spiritual jazz, dope roots reggae reminiscent of Jamaica in the 1960s, alabaster deplume, and more,The world view that can be heard in recent UK jazz and ambient music, such as Vernon Spring, is truly astonishing! It's too early to say, but this is the best reissue of 2026! Tirae Gebre, Ethiopia's most soulful saxophonist. A founding member of the Equators, later renamed the Dahalak Band, he was a central figure in Ethiopia's vibrant hotel music scene and a highly sought after performer and arranger for artists such as Aster Aweke, Mahmud Ahmed, Tirahun Gessesse and Mulken Meresse. He is highly sought after as a performer and arranger for artists such as Aster Aweke, Mahmoud Ahmed, Tirahun Gessesse, and Mulken Melesse, whose musical legacy is unparalleled.Outside of Ethiopia, many people may recognize Tirae Gebre through his work with the Daharak Band, especially through the music of Murken Meresse released in the Ethiopiques series in the 1990s and the album "Wede Harer Guzo" featuring the Daharak Band released on "Awesome Tapes From Africa". Many people may have become aware of their existence through the album "Wede Harer Guzo" by Heil Mergia, featuring the Dahalak Band, released on the Awesome Tapes From Africa label in the 1990s.Like the story of the Ibex Band, which was reissued in 2025, the story of Tirae and the Dahalak Band is rarely told out loud, and although people know of their existence and music, not much is known about the artists themselves and the vigorous work they are still doing. For this release, we have collaborated with Tirae Gebre himself and have obtained full licensing of the work from him, finally being reissued in time for the Addis Jazz Festival on February 6, 2026.The festival will be held at the Guion Hotel, where the album was recorded almost 50 years ago, and will include a homecoming concert for Tirae Gebre and a reunion concert for the Dahalak Band, with the goal of telling their story to a wider audience. As for sound, the original master tapes have been acquired, and the audio has been restored and remastered. In addition to the detailed liner notes, Muzikawi's meticulous reissue work, including the reconstruction of the original artwork, is truly outstanding. It may be early to say, but this will be the best reissue in 2026!
