Description:
Contemporary expressions of mysticism and transcendence. Norrbotten NEO has recorded three works by Juro Živković! Serbian-Swedish composer Juro Živković was born in Belgrade and has lived and worked in Stockholm since 2000. Like J.S. Bach, Bruckner, and 20th century composers such as Sofija Gubaidulina, Olivier Messiaen, and Toru Takemitsu, his work emphasizes mystery, faith, and belief. and faith, are said to be inseparable from his art and creation. Based on his early interest in folklore and Byzantine chant, he developed what he calls the "Ancient Mode," a compositional technique involving scales, harmony, chord progressions, and voice leading. He uses it as his own musical vocabulary, and has published the chamber works of Anders Eliasson (BIS SA-2270) and Klas Torstenson's Lantern Lectures ( The new album follows on the heels of "Lantern Lectures" by Klas Tostenson (BIS SA-2516), and features three of Živković's "signature" works. Inspired by the 11th century Greek monk Nikitas Stithatos' work of the same name, "Citadel of Love" was composed around the concept of "the path of the soul. The compositions include "Invocation" from "Fluid, with watchfull-ness," "De profundis" from "With Peace," and "Rejoice, ora," from "Toccatoso. Rejoice, o Michael! (Rejoice, o Michael!), and "Peace, BringUnto All (Peace, BringUnto All)" from "Toccatoso".It is a work of varied orchestration, with waterphones, theremin, tenor psaltery, anvil and hammer, large and small bells, gongs, woodwinds, as well as narrative and song. I Shall Contemplate...II" is a 2011 work based on a text by Pseudo-Dionysius the Areopagite, a Byzantine theologian of the 5th century. This is a revised "viola and chamber ensemble" version of the 2011 "Voice and Ensemble" piece based on the text by Pseudo-Dionysiusthe Areopagite, the fifth-century Byzantium theologian. The viola soloist will perform the remaining text, which is written in the score, "Every-Thing IsPossible if it dwells in the Spirit". Night Music" is a "highly interesting crossover" work that uses six of Scriabin's mystical piano pieces as its source material, and creates a unique, imaginative, and technical instrumental writing style. Fredrik Bürstedt (1972-), who conducts the Norrbotten NEO, studied conducting with Jorma Panula and has also studied with Daniel Harding, Stefan Solyom, and Jukka-Pekka Saraste. He has conducted in orchestras and operas in Sweden, the Nordic countries, and Europe. He is the recipient of the Sixten Eyring Award from the Royal Swedish Opera House, which is awarded to young conductors, and the Herbert Blomstedt Scholarship from the Royal Swedish Academy of Music.
