Haas / Janacek / Escher String Quartet
Description:
Also includes a percussion version of "From Monkey Mountain". The Escher String Quartet records Janacek and Haas! The Escher String Quartet, an American quartet based in New York City, has recorded the string quartets of Janacek and his student Pavel Haas! Janacek's first piece is a masterpiece, written in a single sitting in only nine days. It is titled "Kreutzer Sonata" and is based on Tolstoy's "Marriage, Adultery, and Murder," a story with a droll eroticism. The second piece, "The Secret Letter," is the last major work Janacek completed, and is a stimulating and intense emotional expression of Janacek's love letter to his wife, 38 years younger than him. Pavel Haas, who studied with Janacek, wrote "From Monkey Mountain" in 1925 at the age of 26, recalling a summer holiday he spent in the Czech-Moravian highlands. The work is characterized by the appearance of percussion in the final movement, "Rough Night. The work emphasizes the jazz ad-lib dictum, and the Escher String Quartet's sharp playing stands out in this piece. The percussionist for this performance is master musician Colin Currie! King International
