Description:

The BBC Singers, led by Brabbins, presents a remarkable new recording of English composer John Pickard's powerful and beautiful choral works on SACD hybrid disc. English composer John Pickard studied with William Matthias and Louis Andriessen and is currently Professor of Composition at the University of Bristol. Known primarily for a series of energetic and powerful orchestral and instrumental works, he has written six symphonies and six string quartets each to date. The Nash Ensemble's performance of his chamber works, The Gardener of Aleppo (BIS SA-2461), was selected for the 2021 Gramophone Award for Contemporary Music, and a new album by the BBC Singers and Martin Brabbins explores Picard's life work in symphonic and chamber music. In between the pieces will be choral works composed between 1983 and 2018. Three Latin Motets," written as an assignment while a student at the University of Bristol, include "O Light from Light," with its simple structure and clear harmonies, and "Where is Mercy and Love," with lyrics from the Holy Thursday Chant. Oh Great Mystery," written for the University of Bristol's Christmas Carol Concert. The "Star of the Sea of Merrymaking" combines straightforward harmonic diction with elaborate textures. Percy Bish Shelley's "Ozymandias," a sonnet on the Egyptian pharaoh Ramses II, was composed when Picard was 19, and already contains dissonances that will serve as a springboard for the 2018 "Mass. The "Mass in Time of Need" takes its title from the "Nelson Mass" (Missa in Angustiis), which Haydn wrote during the Napoleonic Wars. Written by Catholic theology professor Gavin DeCosta, the work is composed to a complex text in the Mass Ordinary and five languages, composed for the BBC Singers and premiered on February 1, 2019, at St. Peter's Church in London, conducted by Andrew Griffiths.BBC Singers is a choir organized in 1924 for radio broadcasts. The BBC Singers have been active at the center of the British choral music scene, premiering Britten's "Hymn to St. Cecilia" and Poulenc's "The Human Voice" among others. King International
