The winner of the 2018 Hamamatsu International Piano Competition, Jean Čakmul, was born in Turkey in 1997 and now presents an ambitious album with a repertoire that is perfectly suited to him. All the pieces are interesting, and it is a great pleasure to hear Chakmur's latest youthful performance of such masterpieces as Bartók's "Piano Sonata" and Enesco's "Piano Sonata No. 3," which Lipatti is known for his famous recording. The piano piece "Passacaglia, Interludes and Fugues" by the great conductor Mitropoulos is also noteworthy. Mitropoulos is a piano virtuoso who has recorded concertos by Prokofiev and Kusenec, and also left behind works of a cutting-edge sensibility as a composer under the tutelage of Busoni. The "Passacaglia, Interludes and Fugues" was written while he was assistant to Erich Kleiber at the Berlin State Opera, and the complexity of the technique is astonishing. Even more delightful is the piano sonata by Chekumr's great predecessor Ahmed Adnan Saigun (1907-91), a fellow countryman. Saigun was Turkey's greatest composer, and like Bartók, he studied the folk music of his country and incorporated it into his works.The "Piano Sonata," a massive four-movement, 23-minute work, was the last piece completed just days before his death. All four pieces are in multi-movement form, requiring difficult technique and energy, and testing compositional skills, but Chakmul's spare fingerwork breathes a whole new life into the work.
