A must for choral and pelt fans! A solemn meditation. The Helsinki Chamber Choir records Pärt's John Passion on this SACD hybrid disc. Arvo Pärt's music is largely characterized by his verbal statements of modern spirituality while remaining connected to ancient religious traditions. He started out in the 1960s with works in the modernist style and, through the 1970s, began to produce more ascetic and introspective works. The work in which his simplification and contemplation reached their peak was the "John Passion," completed in 1982. The official title of the piece is "Passio Domini Nostri Jesu Christi secumdum Joannem" (The Passion of Jesus Christ according to the Gospel of John). In this piece, the story of the Passion of Christ is used only as a framework for "solemn meditation," avoiding the "drama" and "emotional upheaval" that are commonly associated with "Passion pieces.The baritone sings the words of Jesus, the tenor the words of Pilate, and the Gospel historian who tells the story is sung by a quartet of soprano, alto (or countertenor, mezzo-soprano), tenor and bass, accompanied by an ensemble of violin, oboe, cello and bassoon. Pärt's music proceeds in a medieval monophonic style, culminating in the crucifixion of Christ. Schwekendijk and the Helsinki Chamber Choir recorded Rautavaara's "Vigilia" (BIS SA-2422), described by "MusicWeb Internationalao". Pärt's "John Passion" was session recorded at St. Paul's Church in Helsinki in October 2020. Baritone Sampo Haapaniemi is with the Finnish National Opera and Ballet, and tenor Martti Anttila is manager and voice trainer with the Helsinki Chamber Choir. Organist Jan Lehetra graduated from the Sibelius Academy of Church Music and studied in Amsterdam, Stuttgart, Lyon, and Paris.He is also known for his many recordings, including an album (Alba / ABCD-225) in which he played Saint-Saens' "Preludes and Fugues" and "Fantasias".
