SACD hybrid disc. A Star-Studded Lineup! Formed in 2020, the “Wigmore Soloists” is a flexible chamber ensemble centered around Isabelle van Couwen and Michael Collins, born out of a collaboration with John Gillholy (1973–), director of Wigmore Hall. It is the first ensemble to bear the name of this historic hall. The group aims to perform a wide range of repertoire, from Baroque to contemporary, and plans to commission and perform new works by contemporary composers in the future. In addition, the ensemble features outstanding young musicians representing the next generation—including Timothy Ridout, one of today’s most acclaimed violists—making their future activities highly anticipated. Following the ensemble’s formation, their scheduled concerts were postponed due to the COVID-19 pandemic, so this recording was captured in a single session in December 2020. This landmark first release features Schubert’s masterpiece, the “Octet.” This work, with its unique instrumentation—clarinet, horn, bassoon, string quartet, and double bass—has been recorded by many master musicians in the past, but here we have yet another outstanding recording. Inspired by Beethoven’s Septet in E-flat Major, Op. 20 (1799–1800), Schubert composed his Octet. Featuring elegant and brilliant melodies, led by the clarinet and first violin, this work is considered one of Schubert’s greatest masterpieces as a master of chamber music.
