The French National Loire Orchestra led by Roffe recorded an album of Ravel's "Grand Prix de Rome" entries! SACD hybrid disc. The "Grand Prix de Rome" is an award given by the French state to students of fine arts. The "Grand Prix de Rome" is a scholarship program for students majoring in the arts, established by Louis XIV in 1663, which lasted for about 300 years until it was abolished in 1968. When it was first established, awards were given in the fields of architecture, painting, sculpture, and printmaking, but the music prize was added in 1803. The preliminary round is judged on a fugue and choral work, and the final round on a large-scale cantata work with three solo singers and orchestra. Ravel won third prize in 1901 with "Myrrh" but did not win the Grand Prix, and he did not participate in 1904 and did not advance to the finals in 1905. The fact that Ravel, still in his twenties, was so determined to win the "Grand Prix de Rome" is a testament to his genius.Pascal Roffe is like a magician who changes the tone of the orchestra in a colorful way.
