Skalkottas, Nikos (1904-1949)

Description:

A collection of concertos by Skalkottas, who studied with Schoenberg! The Greek composer Nikos Skalkottas, one of Schoenberg's "elite" pupils, is back with a new series of concertos. The "Violin Concerto" is said to have introduced some daring ideas that were not bound by "Schoenberg's limitations. This is the second recording after Georgios Demertzis' performance (BIS-904), the first in the series. The performance is based on the newly revised edition by Eva Mantzolani. The "Concerto for Violin, Viola, and Wind Orchestra" is a work that Skalkottas may have written for his colleague, viola player John Papadopoulos, when he played violin in the Athens National Orchestra. Allegro," "Andantino," and "Allegro vivo." It is one of the first works in classical music to use all the instruments of the saxophone genus: soprano, alto, and tenor. World premiere recording. The performance is based on the revised edition compiled by George Zacharias. Violinist George Zacharias was born in Athens. He studied at the Athens Conservatory and after graduating in 1997, he studied at the Royal Academy of Music in London under Yossi Tzivoni. He received his doctorate from the Royal Academy of Music with a thesis on "Skalkottas the Violinist and Composer." He is based in England.Viola Alexandros Koustas was also born in Greece. He is principal viola of the British National Ballet Philharmonic and also plays as a member of the Academy Chamber Orchestra. King International
